In just a few days, I’ll be photographing my first Engagement Session in Tucson for a couple whose wedding is this November. I thought this would be the PERFECT time to explain the value of engagement sessions and why we photographers believe they are so important for our clients’ overall experience.
So let’s start with one of the more apparent benefits of having an engagement session with your chosen photographer before your wedding day: You will get an idea of how they work behind the camera. What happens when you try to learn a skill for the first time? Typically, you are slow to start. I mean, you’ve never done this particular thing before so you aren’t going to be moving efficiently or with ease. And that’s totally normal.
Then what happens once you’ve had time to practice this skill? You move more quickly, confidently, and effortlessly. There are lots of words I would use to describe my posing style. Yes, styles differ among photographers. But something that I think we all strive for is to have our particular method of posing and working with clients during a session to feel “effortless.” If you feel awkward, rest assured that feeling will translate to your images. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to look back on photos after my wedding day and think to myself: “That doesn’t even look like me. Do I really smile like that? That day was so stressful.”
Instead, if you want to look back at those images and think: “I was so happy! I looked awesome in my dress! I had such an amazing day!” then you need to have an engagement session with your wedding photographer. Spending that time together before your big day, even if it’s only for an hour, will make a huge impact on the final product that you’re paying them for.
This post is only Part One in my series about the value of engagement sessions. Keep an eye out for more reasons why I KNOW you won’t regret having an engagement session of your own before your wedding day.
