I’m so excited to introduce the newest addition to the Hunter Family, our new kitten Knight! We kept the name the shelter had for him. His sister’s name is Luna which means “moon.” And Knight, well, sounds like “night.” Perfect match for my pun-loving, word-playing self!
Mike and I fell in love with him from the moment we held him in our arms at a local pet adoption festival. We have been wanting to get a companion for our 6-year old female cat, Luna, for quite awhile. But we knew that we had the big move to Arizona coming up and that cats, well, aren’t the best travel buddies. Luna definitely brought that stereotype to life. After Day 1, she caught on to the medicine routine, spit it out, and meowed almost the entire drive from Tennessee.
I took Luna in as a stray when she was about a year old. She’s been the spoiled Queen Bee of the home ever since. Well, until we came home with her little brother. Surprise, Luna! Now, I didn’t just spring him on her and hope for the best. Oh no no no. Those of you that know me know that I am an AVID researcher and planner. And every single article I could get my hands on said to separate the cats at first, integrate their scents with each other, and slowly (like, over the course of a few weeks kinda slow) introduce them to each other. So, I gathered all the info, I made a plan… and Mike threw the plan out the window after 2 days!
Knight wanted nothing more than to play with his new sister, but Luna was not having it. Luckily she just stuck to hissing at him every time he came too close and I didn’t have to break up any fur-flying cat fights. After about a week and half, the distance between them grew smaller. And what surprised me the most? Luna is who started the first playful chase! It warmed this kitty mom’s heart for sure!
You can see that they are both still very aware and cautious of each other, despite how much they’ve played together now. Luna always looks to see what her little brother is up to before entering the room. And, yes, he’s usually up to no good.
Their favorite place to hang out right now is the enclosed front porch. Now that the weather is cooling down here in Arizona, we leave the door cracked so they can explore and sunbathe whenever they want.
He wants to pounce on his sister so badly! But she knows he’s there and she won’t be taken by surprise lol.
This 5 month old little boy is exactly what our little family needed! Despite the random kitten attacks my feet receive, he has a super sweet side, too– when he’s tired, at least haha.
Luna has handled this life change better than I could’ve hoped for and I’m so proud of her! She’s not staying perched on the cat tower all day anymore. Oh, and she has made sure she gets her cuddles on the couch whenever she wants them.
I can’t wait to see these two become even closer. Knight will go from a crazy kitten to a more calm cat. I hope that they’ll continue to keep each other company and still chase each other around the dining room table for years and years!
